The German car manufacturer BMW has published today the first official photos and the first details about the production version of the BMW i8 Plug-in hybrid sports coupe. The Bavarian model will be officially unveiled in September at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show.

The new BMW i8 is described as the “most progressive sports car of our time”. It has a drag coefficient of just 0.26 and it comes with a body aerodynamically optimized. Even though the German car maker didn’t publish any interior pictures, the rumors said that the BMW i8 will feature naturally tanned leather seats and will have a 2+2 configuration.

Under the hood of the BMW i8 will be the first three cylinder engine in the BMW history. It will feature the TwinPower Turbo technology and will have a 1.5 liter displacement. The petrol unit will be able to deliver 231 horsepower and 320 Nm peek of torque. According to BMW officials, the petrol engine will spin the rear wheels, while the electric one will power the front axle. The powertrains can be operated indecently or together. The hybrid powertrain has a maxim output of 362 HP and 570 Nm. In these conditions the BMW i8 will be able to run from stand still to 100 km/h in 4.5 seconds, while the top speed is electronically limited to 250 km/h.

In the electrical mode, the car can accelerate to 120 km/h and it has a 35 kilometers range. According to the Germans, the BMW i8 will be able to offer an average fuel consumption of just 2.5 liters per 100 kilometers with only 59 grams of CO2 per kilometer.
