Volvo Trucks presented its brand new XE13 powertrain package in September 2011. This powertrain package is available for the VN series, and quickly became popular, thanks to its amazing fuel efficiency. Now Volvo engineers managed to make the powertrain package even more powerful, without damaging its fuel efficiency.

When introduced, the XE13 powertrain package was rated 425 horsepower. The 2013 iteration of this package has 455 horsepower, while the engine is still capable of cruising at 65 mph at just 1150 rpm. Rpm at a given speed is crucial when the goal is to reduce fuel consumption: measurements show that for every 100 rpm of “downspeeding,” the fuel efficiency improves by 1.5 percent. Therefore, the XE13 package with the 455 horsepower rating will deliver about a 3 percent fuel efficiency gain.

The 3 percent fuel efficiency gain might not seem much. But when we are talking about whole fleets that cruise most times at highway speeds, over the years this small gain can add up to considerable savings in fuel. Another big advantage of the XE13 powertrain package consists in the proprietary Volvo I-Shift automated mechanical transmission and software.

Thanks to this fully integrated drivetrain, each system knows precisely what demands are being placed on each component. There are sensors on every major component, and the information is updated thousands of times per second. With this information the tractor’s I-Shift transmission can direct the engine to respond to its needs more exactly.

As a result of this innovative transmission system, the XE13 powertrain package can deliver a smooth ride everywhere, regardless of the road conditions, traffic or load. There is absolutely no gear-searching: the XE13 powertrain system tunes vehicle performance to the driving conditions.

The XE13 455 hp package is available to the Volvo VN series tractors, and it is rated up to 80,000 pounds (GCWR). It includes the following components: a Volvo D13 engine with 455 horsepower and 1750 lb-ft of torque, Volvo I-Shift overdrive transmission with a 0.78:1 ratio, axle ratios of 2.64 to 2.69 and proprietary software for seamless communication between the powertrain components.
