Vs are slowly gaining popularity throughout the world, but many people still believe that recent technologies are not reliable enough for daily use. Volvo just presented a totally new technology that could make these concerns a thing of the past.

Surveys show that for people considering buying an EV, batteries are the biggest concern. Despite obvious technological advancements, today’s batteries are still heavy, expensive and hazardous both during their active life and after they are discarded.

Volvo has come up with an ingenious solution to the problem. They developed a technology called lightweight structural energy storage components. This basically means that they are trying to incorporate the battery into the structure of the electrified car. Volvo is not alone in this quest: a number of other companies are working on a viable solution, funded by the European Union.

It seems that Volvo has succeeded a breakthrough: the first first carbon fiber nano structured battery components are already fitted into a Volvo S80 test car. The carbon fiber nano structured battery components look completely different from the usual bulky battery packs: they are shaped individually to fit under the car’s exiting panels. Some parts of the panels can be actually replaced by the new, high-tech “structural super capacitor.”

The first Volvo part made of carbon fiber nano structure was its boot lid. It seems the new material works out great: the lid is lighter and more rigid than its metal counterpart, and at the same time, it can store enough power to supply energy to the car’s 12 Volt system.

The charge time is also considerably faster compared to the regular batteries. According to Volvo, „the complete substitution of an electric car’s existing components with the new material could cut the overall weight by more than 15 percent.” For now, there is no information when the technology can enter mass production.
