After releasing a short teaser a few days ago, the German manufacturer launched the Mercedes AMG Vision Gran Turismo. The supercar is special because it will never be produced: it was specially designed for Sony’s premier racing game, Gran Turismo 6. Mercedes made only one, 1:1-scale model of this car: it will be used to celebrate the opening of Mercedes-Benz Research & Development Center in Sunnyvale, CA.

So why should real car enthusiasts care for the Mercedes AMG Vision Gran Turismo? First because just as prototypes, these cars are experiments that show the direction automotive designers are heading. If the public receives these prototypes well, some of their details might be found on actual mass-produced cars.

The Mercedes AMG Vision Gran Turismo not only looks futuristic. Its chassis is made of an aluminum space frame with carbon fiber components, and it weighs only 3053 pounds. With a 590 lb-ft of torque and 577 horsepower AMG V8 under its bonnet, its power-weight ratio is incredibly low, only around 5.2 lbs per hp. This figure is among the best in the sports car segment, meaning that the handling of the Mercedes AMG Vision Gran Turismo is exceptionally dynamic.

Many features of the exterior bring with the classic Mercedes racecar of the ’50s, the 300 SL. In terms of design, the body also has lots in common with the new AMG SLS. The interior is inspired by a Formula 1 cockpit: although has two seats, it is as spartan as possible. The shape of the dashboard and the instrument panel are simple, yet futuristic, and the switches are positioned on the overhead console, just like the cockpit of an airplane.

The Mercedes AMG Vision Gran Turismo is the German manufacturer’s answer to Gran Turismo creator Kazunori Yamauchi’s call. He asked the world’s leading auto manufacturers to celebrate the 15th birthday of the game with future vehicle concepts.
