If you want racing performance and all-round practicality in the same car, check out the new Volvo V60 Polestar. Polestar is a small tuning company, pretty notorious for those who watch the FIA World Touring Car Championship: they are behind the Volvos circling on the track.

There is no doubt the new Volvo V60 Polestar will live up to the history of powerful Volvo wagons, like the 850 T5. Its 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six engine drives 350 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque to all four wheels through a six-speed automatic transmission.

Polestar used a twin-scroll Borg Warner turbocharger, intercooler and overhauled exhaust system to reach this performance. However, the best thing is that the Volvo V60 Polestar doesn’t need special care: the service intervals remained the same, and the fuel- and emission ratings are also unchanged. This means that this car is likely to be just as reliable as the stock version.

The Volvo V60 Polestar is not exactly light: 1822 kg is a far cry from a true sporty car, but thanks to the powerful engine, and the state-of-the art Haldex all-wheel-drive system it moves really fast. It hits 62 miles per hour in 4.9 seconds, its top speed being 155 mph (electronically limited, obviously).

Polestar also modified to the brake system to cope with the increased performance of the car. The stock ones were changed to 371 millimetre ventilated ones with high-quality, six-piston Brembo calipers.

The aerodynamics of the Volvo V60 Polestar have also been improved, using extensive wind tunnel testing. The front splitters, as well as the rear spoiler and diffuser are different, and the airflow underneath the car is also improved.

The Volvo V60 Polestar, as well as the sedan version (Volvo S60 Polestar) will be available from June 2014. For now, there is no information on the possible price tag.
