The S-Class has been a paragon of high end cars with ultimate luxury and loads of innovative features for decades now. Many of the things that were first presented in an S-Class have become standards in the automotive industry, such as airbags, for example. Of course, as the industry was becoming more and more modernized, the innovations have become more advanced and less apparent.

So, you have one of the world’s best – if not the best – car manufacturers, then, you have their flagship model – the S-Class – and then you go for the even further improved AMG version. Until recently this used to be the V8 S63 AMG with 577 hp and 664 lb ft of torque, but the guys at AMG thought this wasn’t stunning enough and that they should move it up a notch and now we have the S65 AMG.

It packs a 6l, V12 biturbo engine that produces 630 hp and 737 lb ft of torque that propel it from halt to 62mph in just 4.3 seconds, while the top speed is limited to 155mph. Of course, in accordance to the AMG’s tradition, they offer an optional removal of the block that results in the top speed of 186mph, which is a nice round 300km/h. However, as you have probably guessed, this round number is also limited and the company estimates that with all the electronic limitations removed, the top speed would be about 200mph. Scarily fast especially when you have in mind that this is a car that weighs close to 5,000lbs. The mpg is said to be just under 20 US, but it’s hard to believe that anyone will be reserved enough behind the wheel of the S65 AMG to actually achieve this figure. Either way, the emissions are in compliance with the EU 6 exhaust emissions standard.

This beast under the hood is paired up with a 7-speed Speedshift automatic transmission which shifts significantly faster than its torque-converter predecessor, even though the old one was no slouch. There are three modes – efficiency, sport and manual and you get paddle-shifters behind the wheel.

The S65 AMG is a RWD car (thank god) as opposed to the S63, so this allows it to feature the MAGIC BODY CONTROL suspension system from one of the best car commercials out there. It works together with the ROAD SURFACE SCAN system which scans the road ahead and adapts the suspension so that it can eliminate the effects of the uneven road on the smooth ride. The car also leans in curves like a motorcycle to reduce the transversal acceleration. Along with this, you get the Collision Prevention Assist Plus and Intelligent Drive system with myriad of driver assistance features whose listing and explanations would make this article huuuuuuuge.

On the outside you will recognize the S65 AMG by its double-bladed grille and chrome accents around the low air intakes which are surrounded by distinctive mesh, as well as the four rectangular exhaust pipes at the back.

On the inside the new features are the all-new touchpad and the head-up display. Most of the other things are the same, which is fine, since there is not much one can do to further improve the interior of the W222 S-Class. You still get the plush materials, two 12.3” TFT screens – one serving as the instrument cluster, and the other one as the infotainment, setup and navigation screen – optional rear executive-style reclining seats with heating, ventilating, massage, individual TFT screens, wireless AKG headsets, etc. Hell, they even have cooling and heating cup holders. As always, AMG offers bunch of exclusive extras reserved for their models to show you that you are not in the standard S-Class, as if it is not good enough just as it is.

Additionally, since Mercedes-Benz opted to return the S-Class coupe into their lineup, AMG also made the S65 AMG version of it. You get the coupe body style with the same tech features and engine, but it is 0.2 seconds faster to 62mph.

As for the competition, there is none. I mean, we could mention the Bentley Continental GT, Flying Spur, Aston Martin Rapide, Audi S8 or BMW 760, but as amazing as these cars are, none of them offer the mixture of tradition, speed and luxury of the S65 AMG. Some are similarly plush, some are similarly fast, but the perfect mixture is reserved for the S-Class. Add to this the two available body styles and the S65 AMG takes the cake.
