The Corvette has been one of the most revered cars of the industry in the last half of century. Recognizable styling, great performance, amazing sound and heaps of history make almost any Corvette a favorite among petrolheads worldwide. This is why the top model is sure to draw even more attention.

The current one is the Z06. The previous one was a remarkable car which provided loads of fun, but also requested a capable driver when pushed to its limits. The latest model is based on the C7 and more driver friendly, including loads of high tech features, new looks and a whole new thing for this model – an eight-speed automatic transmission. Chevrolet put a lot of effort in the development of this transmission and, according to their announcements, it actually upshifts faster than the PDK dual-clutch from Porsche and that one is considered to be one of the best transmission setups in the entire industry today. Moreover, it features manual control, takes up less space than the six-speed from the Stingray, weighs less than even regular Corvettes are destined to offer this wonder of technology starting from next year.

OK, the transmission is amazing so let’s see what it works with. The engine in the new Z06 is a 6.2 l V8 which now features forced induction as opposed to natural aspiration of its predecessor. The 1.7-liter Eaton R1740 TVS supercharger added lots of power and torque, but also requested stronger cylinder heads, intake valves, connecting rods, forged aluminum pistons and more. The power now comes to 650 HP and goes with 650 pounds per feet of torque. This brings the acceleration to 60 MPH to the company announced 2.95 seconds. Some people feel that this number is here mostly to aide marketing, since it sounds very nice when you say that your car accelerates to 60 MPH in under 3 seconds. Either way, it is bound to be very close to that number.

Weight was further reduced through the extensive use of carbon fiber in many places, but most notably for the hood and the roof panel which is now removable. The previous feature usually makes the chassis less rigid, but even when the roof is removed the rigidity is increased by 20%.

Being the top model the Chevrolet Corvette Z06 gets loads of perks as standard. You get the Magnetic Ride Control, limited-slip differential and the drive mode selector familiar from the Stingray which, with a push of a button, adapts steering, throttle mapping, Active Fuel Management, exhaust, Magnetic Ride Control dampers, traction and stability, and even the gauge-cluster display allowing you to dramatically change the characteristics of the car to suit your driving preference or weather conditions.

The interior is a huge step forward for the Corvette. Of course, it is heavily based on the C7 which brought numerous improvements compared to the previous model. The amazing quality soft-touch materials will make any ride a pleasant stay and you can also choose full Nappa leather and carbon fiber details. You also get to choose between two seat options both of which are made of lightweight magnesium. Additional payment allows you to also opt for the Performance Data Recorder which, as its name says, documents various aspects of your driving.

There is no question that the latest Chevrolet Corvette Z06 is an amazing car and a viable competition against the likes of the GT500 and Camaro Hellcat. The big changes which are often a problem for well established models only improved the car in terms of both performance and looks, so we can see them as completely successful endeavors. The new C7 Z06 is absolutely beautiful, stunningly fast, amazingly capable and still a proper everyday ride which you can enjoy even on slippery roads during rainy days in spite of its immense power.

But all this comes with a price. With the starting MSRP of $78,995 it is a bit more expensive than its main competitors. However, we must say that if you prefer the Z06’s styling, or simply the feel behind the steering wheel, the difference is not that significant. With all the innovations the Chevrolet Corvette C7 Z06 offers, it might actually become a new legend for the company.
